The NYCU has implemented a grade point average (GPA) system for academic grades beginning from the first semester of Academic Year 2021

The NYCU has implemented a grade point average (GPA) system for academic grades beginning from the first semester of Academic Year 2021

To follow international trends and keep in line with the international community, NYCU began to implement a GPA system for students’ academic grades (including degree examination grades) in the first semester of the Academic Year 2021. The system is described as follows:
  • The score entered by a teacher may be based on either the GPA or 100-point system, provided that any score entered based on the 100-point system is converted by the system into a GPA-based grade (in accordance with Table 1 of the NYCU Regulations for Grading of Students). The GPA system will be implemented comprehensively in a progressive manner.
  • Beginning from the first semester of Academic Year 2021, all semester grades are determined based on the GPA system without considering the year of admission. The GPA for a semester is calculated by dividing the total number of scores from all courses taken during the semester by the total number of credits taken. The ranking is determined by the GPA.
  • Overall and graduation grades:
  1. For students who began or resumed studying from the first semester of the Academic Year 2015 at Yang Ming Campus and students who began or resumed studying from the first semester of the Academic Year 2021 at NCTU Campus, their grades are determined based on the GPA system. The GPA for overall semesters and graduation is calculated by dividing the total number of scores from all courses taken during each of the overall semesters by the total number of credits taken. Cumulative ranking for the previous semesters and graduation is determined by the GPA.
  2. For students admitted before Academic Year 2014 (inclusive) in Yang Ming Campus and students graduating before Academic Year 2007 (inclusive) in NCTU Campus, their grades are determined based on the 100-point system, and they are ranked by their average academic grade on a 100-point scale. However, if students admitted before the Academic Year 2014 (inclusive) in Yang Ming Campus have delayed graduation or quit school during a semester, they shall be ranked according to the same rules as those for graduates in the same year.
  3. For graduates in Academic Year 2008 and students admitted before Academic Year 2020 (inclusive) in NCTU Campus, their grades are determined based on both the 100-point system and the GPA system. The average academic grade for overall semesters and graduation in the 100-point system is calculated based on the sum of the original grades before Academic Year 2020 (inclusive) on a 100-point scale and the grades after Academic Year 2021 (inclusive) converted into a 100-point scale. The GPA for the overall semesters and graduation is calculated by dividing the total number of scores from all courses taken during each of the overall semesters by the total number of credits taken. Cumulative ranking for the overall semesters and graduation in the GPA system and the 100-point system is determined by the average academic grade in the 100-point system. However, students delaying graduation or quitting school during a semester shall be ranked according to the same rules as those for graduates in the same year.
  • Table 2 to the NYCU Regulations for Grading of Students “Table of Comparison of Grade Point Averages (GPA) Converted into 100-Point Scores” is for reference by students applying for scholarships and by the public.
